Only hours before the Dublon Incident affected Richard at his location in Tanzania he had successfully shot and killed a zebra. Being an avid sportsman and member of the NRA he was very proud of his achievement, and not even bothered when his wife suffered some sort of attack. He didn't mind that the trip would be cut short, as he had already succeeded in what he had gone to Tanzania to do. Not even when he returned to camp to find his son missing spoiled his good mood. He set out with the rest of the party to look for his son in a cheery mood. However, over the next few days while he searched for his son, his mood soured considerably.
Shortly after the party set out in search of his son Richard's voice went through a sudden change. From his normal clear tenor (Richard was in a band in Wisconsin called 'The Bad Bullets' until the Dublon Incident affected his voice), his voice suddenly became a gravely bass. He figured it was an effect of his celebratory shouting after his shooting of the zebra, and the current search for his son which required much shouting. Richard began limiting how much he talked, but there was no improvement in his voice over the next few days. He began to complain about his son, calling him an idiot. He had never quite understood Jerold, calling him "womanlike". When the party found Jerold on the third day Richard simply said, "Well, let's go home."
Back in Wisconsin Richard ignored his son, but supported his wife in her attempts to get him help. At the shooting range his aim started to suffer, as his fingers seemed to not around his rifle as he remembered. His voice did not ever recover from the trip to Tanzania and stayed a gravelly bass. He feared his next speech at the county NRA meeting, but when the time came the crowd listened with much enthusiasm. A NRA representative from the main office happened to be attending the speech and approached Richard with an offer to be a touring NRA spokesperson. Richard declined at first, saying he needed to be at home for his family. However, four days after the speech his son left Wisconsin, and his wife began her zebra ear cartography research. He rethought the offer and accepted it.
Richard and Amelia never got divorced, but they rarely see each other any more. The disintegration of the family had a strong affect on Richard. He began to associate the changes in his voice, rifle aim, and the loss of his family to the zebra he shot just before all the changes began. When he became aware through the Commission that there were many other people affected by similar symptoms that began around the same time as his he came up with a theory that zebras were responsible for cista dublonis. He began to speak as a zebra rights spokesperson for the African Wildlife Foundation. Although his two spokesperson responsibilities conflicted with each other, neither organization was willing to let him go, as his voice mesmerized people so thoroughly.
